Proust uses this device to dig into the character's past. In Mem Fox's Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge, Wilfrid discovers that life's meaning can come from the retrieval of powerful memories. The memories truly are given meaning, however, through making them explicit to someone else. Although fictional role modeling is useful, students also need to see adultsparents, teachers, and administratorsreflect on their practice. Perhaps you can offer an example from your own work. We offer here an excerpt from Bena Kallick's journal reflecting on a workshop session.

My teachers did their best to help me learn this new language, which I now consider to be my first language: English. They were very kind, understanding and empathetic when it comes to my situation. My first childrens novel was given to me that year as a gift from my grade 5 teacher: The Babysitters Club. I remember being very excited about it and hoping that I would soon be able to read it cover to cover. Most of the challenges that I faced dealt with the social aspect of integrating into a new school and a classroom, with new classmates. Having my classmates being more empathetic and kind would have helped me out a great deal. There are a few things that teachers can adopt and model in their classrooms to help build a kind and empathetic social atmosphere for ELL students:There are many other ideas and strategies to implement and practice in the classroom and school to build an inclusive and celebratory atmosphere that encourages empathy and diversity. Do you know about HADOPI in France or similar laws sprouting up recently around the world?Am I being paranoid?Dropbox is popular since it will get around many restrictions companies place on emailing large files. For instance, if you want to send a substantial file, for instance a video or graphic file, to someone in your organization, but no longer can do so as a result of restrictions on email attachment sizes, Dropbox allows you to upload the file and share it together with your colleagues using a web link. The UK, where I live, is on 'lockdown' due to the spread of the new coronavirus, and I imagine that many of you are in a similar situation. I hope you're well, and that you are able to find some positives in this 'new normal' this phrase is being used a lot here. I know that some students are using this time as an opportunity to improve their English. I'm still teaching through my 'online classroom' member site, so you're welcome to join us there if you'd like my help. Feel free to share your 'lockdown' experiences in the comments below, especially if you're using the time to study English and/or prepare for IELTS. Over the last few months I've been in too many places at the same time. I've been publishing daily blog lessons, creating special lessons for the member site, answering emails and comments, and even posting things here and there on Facebook, YouTube and Instagram. I've learnt that by doing too many things, the quality of each one suffers. I want to spend some time doing one thing and doing it better, and I'm afraid I had to choose the member site. So, I'm not leaving the blog forever; I'm taking a sabbatical to work on a project. And if you're a subscriber to my member site, I'll be able to serve you better.
